Mr. Lava's Eurodata Center Euro Chart Similarities: Scandinavia; Czech Republic vs. Slovakia (Published 20 March 2009) How similar are different countries' charts? On 18 March I took a look at various Scandinavian charts to see how much overlap there was between their top 20 songs. I was surprised to see, overall, not much. Here are the percentages of overlap I observed:
Why would Sweden be so particularly unwilling to get along with its neighbors' charts? The answer would be obvious to any Swede: this is the week following Sweden's Melodifestivalen Finals. The Swedish chart was inundated with pop entries from the competition this week, songs that all vied to represent Sweden in Eurovision 2009. This display of pop nationalism would naturally not be reflected in their neighbors' charts. Now that that's all over, and Sweden's Puccini rip-off has won ;-), expect the amount of chart similarity to increase dramatically in the coming weeks between Sweden and its neighbors. I also looked at the top 100 songs in the Czech Republic vs. Slovakia. These two countries were once forced to cohabitate under the name "Czechoslovakia," so you would expect some similarities. The result?:
That's not a lot of similarity, a reminder that these really are two separate nations. But it is a higher amount of similarity than that shared by any two Scandinavian countries in the same analysis.
