Poland 2002 - Lublin (2)Aggie and Paula were excellent guides. On Thursday night they took us to two clubs, both of which were packed. We tried Megido first, which had a sort of African theme running through it. It was extremely crowded and seemed to be popular with the younger student types. Hanging out in their restaurant area to catch our breath after hitting the dance floor, we were surrounded by hot young teenagers. "Hot" not just in the sexy sense of the word, but in the "we're overheating because there are so many of us hot young teenagers packed into this place" sense. MC' was Paula's favorite; it featured a lot of American music, including R&B and rap (the trashier dance stuff seemed to be relegated to the earlier part of the evening). So, in addition to the requisite Kylie Minogue, we got to hear 2pac, Nelly, Eminem, Nelly, Truth Hurts, Nelly, and Nelly. That night, MC' also opened up a back room which served as more of a trance/house venue, but the majority of the clinetele seemed to be there for the American urban sound.
What makes this more interesting is the fact that most of the Poles have no idea what our rappers are, err, rapping about, because the Poles' English-language skills generally are not all that. So, Eminem's "Without Me" didn't get much audience accompanimentthat is, until the "Nya nya nya nya-nya" part kicked in, when the voice of the crowd swelled to a deafening din. On Friday night, we had one altercation with an MC' coat check person who basically double-charged Paula. Ah wellwe can laugh about it now. By the end of that night, after downing several Mad Dog shots (grenadine, vodka, and a splash of Tabasco), the evening seemed to go into a sluggish sort of slow motion, and after having suffered one restless night of panic over "what the fuck am I doing an ocean away from home?" I crossed over into that delirious state of mind where I didn't want the trip to ever end. ***
Lublin is not quite so tourist-friendly, an aspect I liked about it, as it felt a bit more like an "authentic" Polish city. The kids there seem to be a little rougher around the edges and a little more unruly than their big city counterparts, a characteristic which I came to enjoy. Lublin may not make it onto most people's "must see" lists of Poland, but it offers a thoroughly good time to those who drop in.
